Cultural Humility TrainingAn educational experience in advancing Reconciliation through honouring Indigenous voices and improving cultural relationships |
AFCSDeveloping and upholding standards for collective successThe Aboriginal Friendship Centres of Saskatchewan (AFCS) is the collective voice for urban Indigenous People. We serve Friendship Centres by sourcing opportunities for positive impact, promoting effective Friendship Centres upholding standards for collective success. We help the Saskatchewan Centres by sharing expertise, resources ond exchanging ideas that will provide a forum to assist our Centres to carry out their mandate. Friendship Centres have been active in Saskatchewan since 1963 and since then the movement has grown within Saskatchewan to encompass 10 Friendship Centres who are part of the 125-member National Association of Friendship Centres (NAFC). AFCS advocates for and represents Saskatchewan's Friendship Centres. Friendship Centres can be found all over the province from North to South, and West to East Saskatchewan. Although still young, the AFCS is proving to have very bright future with its growing team of hard-working staff. |

Overview of Cultural Humility TrainingLearning with humility, walking towards Reconciliation
Cultural Humility training provides a foundation for organizations and individuals to build respectful and inclusive relationships while directly supporting the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) Calls for Justice, and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). An educational experience focused on renewing relationships between Indigenous peoples and non-Indigenous peoples that fosters culturally safe spaces. Our Cultural Humility Training is unique because it speaks directly to urban Indigenous perspective and values. Our aim is to amplify urban Indigenous voices, deepen understanding of Indigenous realities, promote Reconciliation and foster partnerships between Saskatchewan Friendship Centres and organizations. Your organization can take pride in the fact that 100% of all proceeds are re-invested into our 11 Friendship Centres across the province of Saskatchewan.
How It Works AFCS understand that Cultural Humility is a practice, not simply a presentation. As such, we offer Cultural Humility Training as both a 3-hour session and 7-hour session. Our 3-hour session focuses on foundational information to build awareness. It is perfect for front-line staff and organizations early in their Reconciliation journey. Our 7-hour training session is a deep dive that builds capacity for those ready to move beyond awareness to action. This training is best for leadership teams committed to systems change and any service providers working directly with Indigenous clients. For more information on the different topics covered in each session, please refer to the Cultural Humility Training Information Package located under the Resources section of our website.
Participants will explore: Indigenous History – Residential schools, Indian Hospitals, 60s Scoop and more Cultural Humility - Introduction into Indigenous culture, cultural humility, cultural competency, and cultural safety Racism in the 21st Century - MMIWG2ST, Indigenous children in care, and the Truth and Reconciliation 94 Calls to Action & MMIW Calls for Justice Building Blocks of Reconciliation - Improving communication, Indigenous allyship, and exploring privilege |

Background InformationIn late 2023, AFCS opted to open this training up to all of healthcare as well as not for profits. At AFCS alone, over 50 trainings were held around Saskatchewan and over 1800 people trained in just over three months. The training was overwhelmingly well received |
History of Cultural Humility TrainingStarting in late 2021, the Aboriginal Friendship Centres of Saskatchewan (AFCS) partnered with First Light Friendship Centre in St. John’s Newfoundland to adapt Cultural Humility Training to a Saskatchewan context. AFCS saw the benefits of operating Cultural Humility Training as a social enterprise within Saskatchewan. A social enterprise is a business model where the main goal is to promote social welfare and to re-invest its profits to a social goal or cultural mission. Social enterprises are helping to build Canada’s economy while addressing challenges in communities across the province. At AFCS, revenue generated from Cultural Humility Training session is re-invested into our 11 Friendship Centres across the province of Saskatchewan. AFCS would like to thank and acknowledge Stacey Howse and her team at First Light Friendship Centre—without their help, Cultural Humility Training would not exist. |
