AFCSDeveloping and upholding standards for collective successThe Aboriginal Friendship Centres of Saskatchewan (AFCS) is the collective voice for urban Indigenous People. We serve Friendship Centres by sourcing opportunities for positive impact, promoting effective Friendship Centres upholding standards for collective success. We help the Saskatchewan Centres by sharing expertise, resources ond exchanging ideas that will provide a forum to assist our Centres to carry out their mandate. Friendship Centres have been active in Saskatchewan since 1963 and since then the movement has grown within Saskatchewan to encompass 10 Friendship Centres who are part of the 125-member National Association of Friendship Centres (NAFC). AFCS advocates for and represents Saskatchewan's Friendship Centres. Friendship Centres can be found all over the province from North to South, and West to East Saskatchewan. Although still young, the AFCS is proving to have very bright future with its growing team of hard-working staff. |

Overview of Cultural Humility TrainingOur histories, and how that information can be beneficial to our community as a wholeCultural Humility Training is an educational experience in search of our ties to these lands, discovering commonalities in our journeys, and learning about Indigenous groups in our province... our histories, and how that information can be beneficial to our community as a whole. It is important that we learn about each other's cultures, our cultural differences that we see across different groups, and understand the history behind them and how it impacts our everyday lives. This training is meant for individuals, groups, and businesses to come together and explore cultural humility, and enhance self-awareness in a safe space. Cultural Humility Training is a great professional development opportunity for those who work with Indigenous people. |

Background InformationIn late 2023, AFCS opted to open this training up to all of healthcare as well as not for profits. At AFCS alone, over 50 trainings were held around Saskatchewan and over 1800 people trained in just over three months. The training was overwhelmingly well received |
Partnership with First Light Friendship CentreAFCS heard about the wonderful work at First Light Friendship Centre especially around training that was being set up as a business for the Friendship Centre. Throughout the work at Friendship Centres and AFCS, Reconciliation and the need for more culturally relevant training systems was identified as a a priority. With the blessing and support from First Light Friendship Centre, AFCS and member Friendship Centres were gifted the information on the training and the business model to adapt to the Saskatchewan context. We would like to thank Stacey Howse and her team at First Light Friendship Centre. |

Project SupportAfter these sessions through a grant application, Health Canada approved a grant entitled "Addressing Racism and Discrimination in Canada's Health Systems Program" or Cultural Humility Training. This one-day training is for Saskatchewan health service providers and targets staff at acute care facilities. We want to acknowledge the project support we have received from valuable collaborators including the Public Health Agency of Canada through the Addressing Racism and Discrimination in Canada's Health Systems Program. This program has provided an opportunity to prioritize Saskatchewan's healthcare sector to receive this training. IF you are in the healthcare sector, please reach out to us to discuss your interest. |
